BreastSens Project DIGNITY makes history with NBCC Deadline 2020 lobby on CAPITOL HILL, Washington DC
Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act Introduced in the Senate: Advocate Action Needed
Great news! On May 25th, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), along with Senators Collins (R-ME), Brown (D-OH), Murkowski (R-AK), Shaheen (D-NH), Heller (R-NV), Warner (D-VA) and Grassley (R-IA) introduced the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act (S. 3237), legislation similar to the House bill, HR 3067.
Like Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® and the House bill, S. 3237 focuses on the primary prevention of breast cancer and preventing breast cancer metastasis. It also creates the Commission to Accelerate the End of Breast Cancer which would be tasked with identifying promising opportunities, tools, technology and ideas not currently being prioritized for breast cancer by the public and private sectors, but which, taken together and applied to this issue, hold true promise in ending breast cancer.
The Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act bill in the House currently has 214 bipartisan co-sponsors, thanks in no small part to the hard work of NAN advocates over the past several months and those of you here in Washington, DC for the recent Spring lobby day. At that time, you will recall, we were anxiously awaiting introduction of the Senate bill.
1. Advocates living in the above listed states should thank your Senators right away for introducing legislation so important to Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®!
2. Advocates living in all states should call the offices of your Senators and ask to speak to the Legislative Assistant (LA) for Health Issues. Tell the Health LA that you urge your Senator to co-sponsor the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act, S. 3237, bipartisan legislation that focuses on primary prevention of breast cancer and preventing breast cancer metastasis - the spread of the disease to other parts of the body.
3. If your Senator agrees to co-sponsor the bill, tell the Health LA to email Jen DeAngelis in the office of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, primary sponsor of the bill.
The Senate is in recess this week, returning to Washington on Monday, June 4th. If you have the opportunity to speak to your Senators while they are in your states this week thank those who have already sponsored and encourage those who haven't to do so.
