The goal of the AORTIC African Cancer Leaders Institute (ACLI) is to develop the next generation of leaders in cancer research, advocacy, education, policy, and clinical practice in Africa. The ACLI will develop activities for individuals who commit to provide leadership in cancer for Africa. The ACLI will commission workshops, satellite meetings, exchanges, and other activities to compliment the professional competencies of ACLI participants. Examples of culturally appropriate leadership skills to be developed include:
Advocacy skills for interaction with policymakers in Ministries of Health and other governmental bodies;
Relationship management and development of partnerships with academic, governmental and non-governmental organisations;
Management of gender and ethnicity issues;
Media relations, communications development and campaign management to improve understanding of cancer among the African public, policymakers, and others;
Developing sustainable clinical practice, research and training initiatives, including funding mechanisms; and
Organisational management skills such as professional groups or cancer associations.
The inauguration of the ACLI will occur at the AORTIC 2013 meeting in Durban, South Africa, 21-24 November 2013. The ACLI is conceived as a “meeting within a meeting” and will take place at the biennial AORTIC meeting. ACLI participants will be expected to attend the regular AORTIC scientific sessions, but also participate in lunchtime meeting sessions designed specifically for the ACLI, as well as meet with mentors individually.
Following the start-up meeting, participants are also expected to maintain contact with their mentors and other individuals on a regular basis (minimum requirements to be defined), and report on activities they have engaged in as a result of their participation. Goals and objectives for these activities are to be set and agreed in a kick-off session with their assigned mentor. The ACLI will form the basis of an African leadership network for cancer control in Africa, which itself will have annual goals and objectives set by the AORTIC Council.
Participants will be chosen on a competitive basis among Africans residing in Africa of any age or career level, however, there will be an emphasis on young scientists, clinicians, NGO staff, and other health professionals under the age of 40 with a minimum of 3 years’ professional experience and a demonstrated personal commitment to cancer control in Africa.
An initial 2013-cohort of 6 participants will be selected, with the goal of expanding cohorts as the programme becomes more established. Both a regional and gender balance per cohort will be strived for as will a mix of participants from different professional settings in the cancer community.
Application and Selection Process
Applicants will be selected by a committee appointed by the AORTIC Council based on their potential to develop as leaders in healthcare, research, community outreach, advocacy, governmental liaison, or other critical areas of need for cancer in Africa. Potential to take on a future leadership role in AORTIC will also serve as a criterion for selection. Applicants must be current residents of an African country. Applicants will complete an application form, which will also include a brief statement about their plan to develop as a leader for cancer in Africa. A monitoring and evaluation process will be developed to follow this process, assess longer term impact of the participants and inform the application process.
Successful applicants will be chosen by an independent board appointed by the AORTIC Council. The board will chose the ACLI candidates based on their experience and promise to become leaders in cancer in Africa. The selection committee will also attempt to identify candidates across the breadth of disciplines and activities.

ACLI participation is for a two-year period. Graduation at the AORTIC conference 24 months after their application will include nomination to a junior role in AORTIC and the Fellowship of ACLI. ACLI graduates are expected to maintain a relationship with AORTIC as Fellows who will be expected to develop courses, engage in fundraising, and develop meeting sessions, in their own countries and across Africa, as a continuation of their leadership activities and training. ACLI Fellows may also include more senior mentors and other individuals who have an interest in developing cancer leadership initiatives in Africa.
The agenda for ACLI participants at AORTIC 2013 is as follows:
1) An introductory session for all participants.
2) Morning breakfast orientation sessions at which the events of the previous day will be discussed (what did you learn? what questions did you have about the sessions?) and an overview of the day’s sessions to help participants plan their meeting attendance.
3) Daily lunchtime sessions that will include lunch and an invited speaker. The speaker will present on a relevant aspect of leadership in cancer in Africa. The presentation will be followed by group discussion.
4) A closing session to summarise the events of the meeting.
In addition to the group events, participants are expected to schedule individual meetings with mentors at their mutual convenience throughout the day. There will be a sign-up sheet to set up these meetings. Mentors may also accompany participants to poster sessions or other meeting sessions.
Individuals of senior stature with experience in various aspects of research, academic, clinical, outreach, and other areas of leadership in Africa will be identified to serve as mentors to ACLI participants. These individuals will be asked to meet individually with participants to discuss relevant aspects of their experience and expertise that will aid the participant’s leadership development. Some mentors will also be asked to present at the lunchtime ACLI sessions and lead group discussions. Mentors will be drawn from AORTIC leadership, as well as recognised leaders in relevant fields. Mentors will be able to draw on additional resources and advice from AORTIC partners, members and supporters. The ACLI monitoring and evaluation plan will include evaluation of the performance of each mentor to inform matching of mentor and mentee is future rounds.
Participants accepted into the ACLI will receive stipends for travel to Durban, South Africa, AORTIC meeting registration, and local accommodations and meals during their stay.
